Marymount indebted for the generosity from the Liam Miller Tribute Event

Founded in 1870 in 2011 Marymount University Hospice moved to the outskirts of Cork City to a purpose built modern facility.  Marymount is the hub from where Specialist Palliative Care services are delivered to those in need throughout Cork City and County. Palliative Care, once regarded as an area of medicine concerned only with end of life care, is now recognised as a medical speciality improving the quality of life and survival time for people with life limiting illness. At Marymount, care is offered to those living with life limiting conditions.  Through interventions such as good symptom management, meeting the physical, psychological and social needs of patients and we enable people to live the best life possible for as long as possible.  The services delivered include inpatient hospice, daycare and an extensive community outreach across the county.

Marymount’s activity levels continue to grow with access to all those with complex needs requiring its services, irrespective of age or diagnosis.  At a very difficult time in their lives, Marymount believe that those they care for deserve the best and it is a day-to-day struggle to resource palliative care effectively.  We receive 70% state funding and thus public efforts for fundraising are essential.  In order to provide such invaluable services Marymount must raise at least €3 million each year. Additionally, Marymount are still paying off the cost of the new state of the art facility that opened in 2011 with an outstanding debt of more than €5 million.  Marymount are so grateful to the people of Cork for their ongoing support. Without fundraising support, Marymount would have to cut services at a time of growing need.

The Board and Management team of Marymount are deeply grateful to the organising committee of the Liam Miller tribute event for generously supporting Marymount in this way.  The event was an enormous success and reflected the essence of a good community which also reflects the ethos of palliative care.  We wish to express thanks to Liam Miller’s family for supporting Marymount and we wish to remember them at this time, hoping that the support of Liam’s fellow players and friends and all those involved in this wonderful event will bring them some comfort in the difficult times ahead.  Marymount belongs to the people of Cork.  We are truly indebted to the entire community for their ongoing support and friendship.

Fan Liom

Fan Liom’ (Meaning ‘Stay with me’) is an Irish song about lost love, resilience and hope.

Sung by Lasairfhíona de Brún, with Cork Youth Orchestra, music by Malcolm Urquhart and lyrics by John Browne.
The song was initially featured in TG4’s Junior Eurovision. It was then preformed live with Cork Youth Orchestra at the orchestra’s Christmas Concert in Cork City Hall and subsequently recorded in Cork School of Music recording studio. The video was then made by Dog Day Media, Cork.
