Course Description:

This one day workshop is designed to provide all members of staff working in long stay care settings for older people with the opportunity to improve their communication skills, confidence and competencies when dealing with residents at end of life. The workshop has been developed by the Irish Hospice Foundation and includes a mix of education, group work, reflection DVD’s and role playing using “live” situations/issues identified by participants.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the day, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the importance of empathy in providing end of life care where the residents needs come first
  • Develop confidence in initiating and responding to end of life conversations with residents
  • Enhance their communication skills in interacting with residents to ascertain what matters most to the resident in terms of their end of life wishes and choices
  • Appreciate the role of the health carer in helping residents to live their lives in residential care settings by living to the end

Target Audience:

All staff working in long stay care settings for older people (e.g. Nurses, Healthcare Assistants, Catering, Porters, Social Work, Housekeeping, Admin etc)

Course Fee:

€85 to include Certificate of Attendance


What Matters to me is accredited by the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland and has Category 1 approval  (8 NMBI CEUs)  & by the Irish Association of Social Workers.
